The first formal meetings of APEC Viet Nam 2006 have begun with a series of seminars and workshops in Ha Noi.
The Symposium on Information Privacy Protection in E-Government and E-Commerce as well as several other meetings commenced today in the lead up to the First APEC Senior Officials Meeting of 2006 on March 1-2.
Viet Nam's Vice Minister of Trade, Dr. Le Danh Vinh, welcomed delegates to the "APEC Symposium on Information Privacy Protection in E-Government and E-Commerce" by highlighting the value of the following two weeks of APEC meetings.
"I am hopeful that this Symposium and the APEC Senior Official Meeting will be the opportunity to strengthen our partnership and exchange ideas to set specific goals for our activities," Dr. Vinh said in his opening address.
Dr. Vinh discussed advances in information technology and how this contributes to the social and economic benefits for individuals, businesses and governments in the region. He also noted the importance of protecting the integrity of this resource.
"Information and communication technologies, including mobile technology, link the Internet to other information networks and make it possible to collect, store and access information from anywhere in the world at the lowest price," Dr. Vinh said.
"Misused personal information may affect democracy and personal privacy pointing out the need for cross-border cooperation among APEC economies to launch the common privacy policy and legal framework, as well as technical supports."
The Symposium on Information Privacy Protection in E-Government and E-Commerce also included presentations from Nguyen Khoa Son, President of the Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology and a keynote address by Mr. Malcolm Crompton, Managing Director of Information Integrity Solutions Pty Ltd and the former Federal Privacy Commissioner of Australia.
The three day symposium will cover issues relating to information privacy in e-government and e-commerce, the legal and regulatory environment for protecting personal information of customers and citizens, the role of technology in information privacy protection and lessons learned from implementing the APEC Privacy Framework.
