Description

Macroalgae, commonly known as seaweed, holds significant potential as a biomass source for biofuel generation. Utilizing seaweed can create economic opportunities, enhance energy security, mitigate climate change, and promote sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region, where favorable conditions for seaweed cultivation exist. This report explores seaweed as a renewable feedstock for bioenergy and biorefinery, focusing on advancements in production technologies and addressing challenges in biofuel production. It covers large-scale cultivation, carbon sequestration technologies, and processing techniques. The document also discusses the development of seaweed-based biofuels, including sugar extraction, saccharification, and bioethanol production. Additionally, it examines the promotion of APEC cooperation in seaweed cultivation for sustainable bioenergy, emphasizing research and development, education, policy support, infrastructure, and strategic outreach. The appendices summarize the June 2024 workshop in Seoul, highlighting key findings and discussions on seaweed cultivation and its applications.
