Description
The APEC project, Conversion of Coal-Fired Power Plants Using Energy Storage Systems: Experiences, Challenges, and Opportunities, was developed to promote knowledge sharing, foster innovation, and build technical expertise among APEC economies. This project included a two-day seminar in Santiago, Chile, in August 2024. Key discussions at the seminar focused on four main areas: (1) Lessons learned from retrofitting coal-fired power plants with energy storage systems; (2) policy and regulatory challenges in plant closure and conversion; (3) environmental and social considerations in retrofitting; and (4) emerging business opportunities from coal plant conversions. The objective of this report is to provide a comprehensive summary of the key findings and recommendations discussed and provide a valuable framework for APEC economies to accelerate the retirement or retrofitting of coal-fired power plants while leveraging energy storage systems.
